Agua y sed Water and thirst.

Tres años después, hemos vuelto a Astam - felices de comprobar que la familia Adhikari sigue incansable en su misión de mejorar la vida de su comunidad. A pesar de ser hombres de negocios, todos los integrantes de esta familia trabajan duro y continuado en promover un turismo responsable y en extender prácticas responsables entre los habitantes de su entorno. agricultura ecológica, separación de basura, placas solares y cocina con biogas son algunas de sus contribuciones diarias. Hay quien les critica por que también tienen un negocio provechoso, alojando a turistas en su "Eco-Village"; hay quienes les critican porque su ecologismo no es perfecto. Para nosotros, que los conocemos bien, son un ejemplo de futuro y esperanza para su país. Son una familia grande pero muy unida, y viven de forma consecuente con su entorno y con su gente. Admiramos su sabiduría, su paciencia, su tesón, su solidaridad, su compromiso... y sobretodo, admiramos que sean capaces de creer en algo y de hacer lo posible para que ocurra. 

Siempre han sido - y seguirán siendo - una inspiración para nosotros. 

Three years later, we return to Astam… and we are happy to see that the Adhikari family is still as committed as before with their mission to improve the quality of life in their community. Even though they are business men, all the family members are hard workers and their ongoing hard  work is still focused on promoting responsible tourism, as well as sharing sustainable life habits with the locals.

Organic farming, recycling, solar panels and biogas cooking are just some of their daily contributions. Some criticize them because they are a business and after all, their “Eco-Village” is an attractive tourist spot; some say their eco-friendliness is not perfect. We know them well and for us, they are a good example and a hope for the future of their country. They are a big but strongly united family. We admire their wisdom, solidarity, patience, tenacity and compromise… and above all, we admire that they are able to believe in something… and do as much as is in their hand to make it happen. 

They always have been - and always will be- an inspiration.

 2 of a big family of gems!

Durante esta visita, la familia ha estado muy ocupada colaborando con un proyecto llevado a cabo entre voluntarios americanos y la población local. El objetivo: abastecer de agua a la localidad de forma permanente. Durante época de monzón, los manantiales del pueblo tienen agua suficiente para responder a sus necesidades... pero cuanto más se adentran en la época seca, menos agua hay y más lejos tienen que andar para cargarla en grandes y pesado cántaros. Este proyecto administrará mejor el agua de la que disponen, la almacenará en grandes bidones para poder repartirla mejor a lo largo del año. Además, recogerán agua de lluvia  cosa que aumenta considerablemente lo litros de reserva. 

During our visit, the family was very busy helping with an American funded project in cooperation with local volunteers. Their main aim is to create a permanent water supply for the community. During monsoon time there is enough water to meet their needs... but as soon as the dry season kicks in, there is less water available and women and children have to walk longer and longer distances each time to collect it. This project introduces an improved water management system: various big water tanks will hold thousands of liters, collected from the springs and from the rain.

Gracias a colaboración Japonesa, EcoVillage ha sido pionero en la zona a la hora de instalar un simple pero muy eficaz sistema de purificación de agua. Tres cubos con arena y gravilla de rio son los encargados de filtrar el agua que, por la fuerza de la gravedad, se filtra desde un depósito más grande... dónde hay agua que sobretodo proviene de la recolección de lluvia. Este agua no necesita de ningún elemento químico para ser purificada... es simple, eficaz y sobretodo, adaptado a sus posibilidades.

A Japonese initiative has also installed a pioneer eater purification system in Ecovillage. Three buckets filled with sand and pebbles from the river bed are all that is needed to filter the water and make it safe for drinking. No chemical agents are needed, and best of all, it is simple, effective and adapted to their possibilities.

Vivir en las montañas no significa tener agua limpia al alcance. La vida rural está repleta de riesgos para la salud, y cuando no hay la higiene y la gestión de residuos no son las correctas, el agua se convierte en un peligro para la salud. Además Nepal está sufriendo de forma explícita un cambio en el clima: poblaciones enteras está emigrando porque los ríos que antes les abastecían, ahora están secos. En la falda de los Himalaya, hay sequía. Es por ello que iniciativas como estas salvan a las personas de perder su dignidad, y sus orígenes: les dan herramientas para que puedan aprovechar mejor sus recursos vitales, y de una forma más sostenible. 

Living in the mountains doesn't necessarily mean having clean water. Rural life is full of health hazards. Especially where there is no good hygiene and waste management habits, water becomes a real threat to health and wellbeing. Moreover, Nepal is explicitly suffering from drastic climate change: entire villages are on the move. Their rivers, which used to run full, have dried up. On the foothills of the Himalayas - there is serious drought. That is why initiatives like these save people from losing their dignity and their roots: they allow people to stay in their homes by giving them better tools to improve the use of their vital resources in a more sustainable and efficient way.
