La casa de l'esperança - MAITRI GRIHA - the house of hope

Prayers at Bouddhanath Stuppa, Kathamndu

Kathmandu sembla una ciutat caótica la primera vegada que l’experimentes. Bruta, contaminada i superpoblada, no és fácil viure en ella per a uns occidentals acostumats a les comoditats d’un poble mediterrani. Tot i això, alhora té alguna cosa que fascina: es exótica, està plena de vida i la mescla cultural que es respira als seus carrers la fa tan interesant que quan la coneixes bé no pots parar de recorrer els seus carrers i racons especials.

Un d’aquestos racons, el nostre preferit, és el barri de Boudhanath, un oasi de tranquilitat enmig de la bogeria. L’estupa (temple de culte budista) de Boudhanath és la més gran del món i és un lloc de peregrinació per a budistes. El barri que la rodetja és la llar de multitud d’exiliats tibetans, que troben ací la pau necessària per a continuar amb les seues vides.

L’estupa no és com els altres temples, no es pot entrar, sols es pot rodetjar. Té forma de mitja esfera i a dalt de l’esfera hi ha una torreta amb els ulls de Buda mirant cap a tots els punts cardinals. Els peregrins es mesclen amb els turistes i els sons dels mantres amb els sons dels coloms mentres les banderes de colors deixen que el vent s’enduga les plegàries escrites en elles cap al cel.

Tenim la sort de vindre prou a sovint a Boudhanath. Durant el temps que passem a Kathmandu vindrem almenys dos dies a la semana ja que altre dels projectes amb els que col·laborem es troba al barri.

Maitri-Griha (La casa de la amistat) és un centre de dia per a xiquets amb discapacitats psíquiques i físiques. Dona acollida a 13 xiquets de diferents edats als quals educa, alimenta i proporciona atenció fisioteràpica.

La discapacitat és un estigma que encara està lluny de ser normalitzat a Nepal. Sense ajudes públiques i amb la poca educació i desinformació dels projenitors, els xiquets amb discapacitats acaben abandonats o tancats en habitacions, amagats del món.

Són organitzacions xicotetes com ara Maitri-Griha les que potenciaran el canvi: les que educaran als pares i als xiquets per a donar-los alguna esperança, i les que faran que l’administració comence a fer alguna cosa més per a aquest grup de la població, que amb ajuda, paciencia i comprensió pot ser inclós en la societat i aportar molt, com ja podem vore en Occident.

Per això continuem ajudant Maitri-Griha, amb les aportacions de l’Ajuntament de Puçol i de la Fundación TAI, i des del terreny amb els coneixements de sanitat i les destreces pedagògiques dels nostres voluntaris per a, pedreta a pedreta, anar construint un món més just.

First experienced, Kathmandu seems nothing but chaos. Dirty, polluted and overpopulated, it’s not easy to live in it for people that are used to western conforts. At the same time there is something fascinating in it. Kathmandu is an exotic city, full of life and with many cultures blended in its streets and special places.

One of these special places, and also our favourite, is the district of Boudhanath, an oasis of stillness in the middle of madness. Boudhanath Stuppa (buddhist temple) is the biggest in the world and it is a pilgrimage site for buddhists. Many Tibetans in exile have found their home in the surroundings of the stuppa, making the district a peaceful place to live.

A stuppa is not like other temples, it is not possible to go in: you have to surround it. It has a half-spherical shape and, on the top, it has a tower with the Buddha’s eyes looking to each of the four cardinal points.

Pilgrims mix with tourists. Sounds of mantras mix with pigeon chanting. Meanwhile, coloured flags dance in the wind, letting the prayers written on them fly to the sky.

We are lucky; we’ll come twice a week to Boudhanath because we help a project placed in this district.

Maitri-Griha (house of friendship) is a day centre for children who are physically and mentally challenged. There are 13 children of different ages and here they have a change to receive a good education, healthy food and physiotherapy treatment.

Disabled people are stigmatized in Nepal. Due to the lack of government help and parent’s poor education, these children usually end up abandoned or hidden in rooms, out of the real world.

Small NGO’s like Maitri-Griha can make a difference: In the short run, they will teach kids and parents and better their quality of life. In the long run, they will also be an inspiration to the Government and to society, motivating more moves towards the integration of this group of people who can contribute so much in our society.

It is for these reasons that we believe in the work of Maitri-Griha. With the funds that the Ayuntamiento de Puçol and Fundación TAI had donated and the help of our volunteers we continue working together towards a fairer world.
